There are always hidden costs

Well, I managed to do part of what I had planned on Monday. I spent some time in the garden, roasted the chicken and made the pie. What I didn't do was scrape paint from the switch covers. I went to the local home improvement store and bought the steel wool and some other painting supplies and while I was there one of the men who works there told me that scraping the paint off would most likely ruin the original finish. So I didn't start because if that happens then I have to buy all new covers, which is not something I'd planned for.

The very nice gentleman (who insisted on calling me love and darling - I don't think they get many young women in there...) explained that if I was going to change the covers, I could probably do it myself, but it would involve turning off the electricity at the mains and connecting the correct wires. I'm sure I can do it, but it does sound a bit more complicated than my initial plan.

So now I'm trying to think of alternatives - scraping down the paint currently on there and spraying the uncovered plates with a glossy white paint? But that still requires taking them off the wall and reconnecting the wires. I guess I should just take a deep breath and go for it. The worst that can happen is that the finish is ruined and I need to re-finish them or buy new ones. Not the end of the world, but still a bit annoying.

I'm off to Dublin this weekend with Dan, so there won't be much (any, really) progress on the house until next week. Still hoping to get some photos up either today or tomorrow.

Let me know if anyone has a good suggestion about what to do with the covers!

  2. You can totally handle taking off the light covers and reconnecting the wires later. I did it at home when I was in HS, my dad showed me how and its really not complicated. Just make sure to turn off the breaker- unless you want a bit of a shock! :) Good luck! Looking forward to the pics.
